Job Description

Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research (NIBR) is the innovation engine of Novartis. We collaborate across scientific & organizational boundaries, with a focus on powerful new technologies that have the potential to help produce therapeutic breakthroughs for patients.

The Global Head NIBR Portfolio Management leads and builds the portfolio management organization to monitor and drive NIBR portfolio performance, maximize quality candidates brought to the clinic, provide compelling visualization and analyses of the portfolio data, manage portfolio governance processes, and provide a functional home for the Global Program Manager group across NIBR.

He/she represents NIBR’s interest and ensures common understanding of the NIBR portfolio and its priorities to Head Portfolio Strategy & Analytics, GDD and Innovation Medicine groups and contributes to discussions and decisions around Novartis portfolio.

Understanding the entire drug discovery and development process and the goals of NIBR, NVS and its affiliates, the incumbent will help to structure and direct the global discovery research and early Development portfolio both strategically and tactically to achieve those goals, ensuring a strong interface with the entire R&D organization. Working closely with the NIBR President, Chief Financial Officer (CFO), Chief of Staff, and scientific leadership, the Global Head will track and prioritize portfolio projects to enhance probability of success through innovation by recommending resource adjustments, optimizing the pipeline, identifying areas for operational improvement, and promoting scientific rigor throughout NIBR.

What you will be doing:
•Accountable for shaping and influencing portfolio through membership on the following governance boards: Targets and New Technologies (TNT), Translation Early Development (TED), NIBR Deal Committee (NDC) and contribute to these boards as well as the Innovation Management Board (IMB) through setting of processes and standards to project teams.
•Facilitates decision making with respect to the NIBR portfolio in real-time, including portfolio prioritization, identifying projects to stop, tradeoffs, scenario planning and portfolio strategy. Drives the Portfolio Review and helps shape the NIBR Portfolio Revue off-site.
•With the NIBR President and NIBR CFO, co-leads the Financing in Early Development (FED) board to review and make funding decisions and prioritization of the NIBR portfolio.
•Collaborates with Strategy & Growth (S&G) and GDD Strategy, Program and Portfolio Operations (SPPO). Represents NIBR’s interest and ensures common understanding of the NIBR portfolio and its priorities to Head Portfolio Strategy & Analytics, GDD and Innovation Medicine groups and contributes to discussions and decisions around Novartis portfolio. Works with Global Project Management (GPM) across NIBR to manage portfolio information of more than 300 projects from Target Discovery/Enabling Technologies through Proof-of-Concept trials (Phase IIa) and establishes a functional home to the GPM.
•Accountable for leading NIBR portfolio review process with the NIBR President on at least a biannual basis and develops the templates used for the reviews.
•Formulates accurate analyses and reports on the NIBR portfolio, improves portfolio systems and visualizations, ensures high quality data, and provides day-to-day portfolio advice to stakeholders globally.
•Develops portfolio evaluations to assess NIBR productivity and identify gaps and areas of improvement to enable high probability of success, reduced cycle times and improved transitions of projects into the GDD portfolio.
•Collaborates with NIBR Head of Strategy and NIBR Head of BD&L on external portfolio and productivity benchmarking efforts.

Minimum Requirements

What you will bring to the role:
•Advanced degree or equivalent education/degree in life science/healthcare required.
•A strong scientific leader, the Global Head Portfolio Management will combine advanced technical training with at least 15 years industry experience, steeped in research & development, portfolio management, strategy, project management and with significant exposure to commercialization.
•Demonstrated ability to lead and influence within a global matrixed organization
•Extensive experience leading large cross-disciplinary teams
•Strong collaborative and communicative skills
•Strong change management skills
•Innovative, purpose-driven, and display a strong and consistent sense of urgency
•Ability to travel
