Our employees reflect the diversity of our customers, the markets where we operate and the communities which we serve. We invite you to help us shape the future of agriculture. At Syngenta, we believe every employee has a role to play in safely feeding the world and taking care of our planet.

The Research Institute of Organic Agriculture FiBL was founded in 1973 and is situated in Frick (canton of Aargau). It is one of the world’s leading research and information centers for organic agriculture and employs 300 people in Switzerland. The close links between different fields of research and the rapid transfer of knowledge from research to advisory work and agricultural practice are FiBL’s strengths. The competence of FiBL Switzerland is also sought after beyond the Swiss borders. Thus, FiBL is involved in numerous international projects – not only in research, consultancy and training but also in development cooperation. FiBL has a modern research infrastructure and close links with organic farms.

Post-doctoral Fellow in induced resistance towards plant diseases (m/f/d)

We offer a post-doctoral researcher position to work on a collaborative project between FiBL and Syngenta on the induction of plant defenses to control plant pathogens. The position is limited to three years and is primarily located at the Syngenta Global research site in Stein (Switzerland) within the Disease Control Research Biology group. A significant amount of time might also be spent at the research facilities of FiBL in Frick.

Role Purpose:

With your proven track record and sound scientific knowledge in plant pathology and agronomy, you will contribute to strengthening Syngenta’s and FIBL’s activities in the field of induced resistance. Thanks to your excellent interpersonal and communication skills you will collaborate and share the advancement in the field of induced resistance with internal and external stakeholders.

Accountabilities:

• Assess pathology information and knowledge for induced resistance from agronomic to biochemical/molecular level, especially for the host/pathogen systems sugar beet/Cercospora beticola, tomato/different diseases and/or wheat/Septoria
• Drive the development of new screening methodologies for the discovery of inducers of resistance to be used as crop protection products, covering both biological and chemical solutions
• Actively perform and coordinate screening activities based on these testing methods at the laboratory and greenhouse scale
• Conducting proof of concept field experiments with identified candidate substances
• Analyse and interpret experimental data, present conclusions in detailed reports and presentations
• Enable the research team to be linked to relevant agronomic questions in relation to induced resistance to control plant diseases on a global level
• Act as a contact point for this topic within internal Syngenta functions, FiBL and external global collaborations (CROs, academics)
• Be an active member of the scientific community by effectively networking e.g., with the relevant scientists, research institutes, universities, and scientific societies
• Contribute to Syngenta’s and FiBL’s scientific impact through publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at international scientific meetings

Qualifications

Requirements:

• A PhD in Plant Pathology or Agronomy, with knowledge about induced resistance
• Good level of practical experience in agronomic and pathologic aspects of plant disease and/or general plant-pathogen interactions
• Proven expertise in setting microbial assays in vitro and in planta, ideally with a focus on induced resistance
• Experience in molecular biology desired
