Syngenta is leading science-based agtech company; dedicated to bringing plant potential to life. Each of our 28,000 employees in more than 90 countries work together to solve one of humanity’s most pressing challenges: growing more food with fewer resources. A diverse workforce and an inclusive workplace environment are enablers of our ambition to be the most collaborative and trusted team in agriculture.

Our employees reflect the diversity of our customers, the markets where we operate and the communities which we serve. No matter what your position, you will have a vital role in safely feeding the world and taking care of our planet. Join us and help shape the future of agriculture.

About this opportunity:

We are building an R&D-wide data ecosystem which will help us curate, connect and exploit data (internal and external, historical and new, scientific and operational) – making our data more Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable (FAIR) and thus the foundation of our digital transformation. We call our data platform Gaia – the Greek deity of Earth. Earth holds the soil where life grows – and connected data is the soil where novel insights and innovation grow leading to better products that meet the grower and societal needs. In Gaia, our R&D data will be organised in Data Domains – data hubs that will ingest, curate and connect like-minded data and make it accessible for different users and uses.

We are looking for a Data Domain Lead, to define, refine and implement the data strategy roadmap within the Safety data domain, which includes ingestion, curation, preparation, quality, governance and transformation of internal and external data sources and types into FAIR, connected, and exploitable data products for analytics and decision-making. You will work in close partnership with the R&D leaders, data subject matter experts (SMEs) and R&D IT. You will link with the other data domain leads to adopt best practices, ensure standardization and interoperability of R&D data and metadata, drive adoption, and deliver cross-functional, cross-domain transformational use cases.  You will act as a data and analytics translator and ambassador of our data platform, connected data products and domains across and beyond CP R&D.

You will be accountable for:

  • Working with R&D senior leaders and digital leads to understand the business (scientific and/or operational) strategic needs, opportunities, priorities and use cases. Translate the business needs into a corresponding roadmap of FAIR data maturity for the data domain, which includes data sources, data curation and data utilization.

  • Leading the collation of data and business requirements, e.g. current and desired data flows, IT dependencies, security, complexity, quality, data curation and harmonization needs, utilization needs and assessment of downstream impact/value.

  • Obtaining sponsorship by senior leaders and commitment by functional data SMEs, use case owners and R&D IT to run data prototyping and industrialization projects

  • Leading the design and implementation of seamless, end-to-end, automated data flows – from data generation to capture, storage, processing, and data exploitation, to ensure FAIR and reliable downstream data products

  • Defining, measuring and monitoring KPIs for the adoption and impact of accessible, connected data within and out of the data domain

  • Forging networks of digital leads, data champions, data consumers, and experts in the R&D functions to drive engagement and adoption

  • Working with other data domain leads to explore, design and deliver innovative, cross-functional, cross-domain data use cases in an Agile fashion

  • Championing the use of our data platform, data domains and data products & working with data experts and digital leads to share best practices, drive utilization and exploitation of the data domains and platform

  • Championing and promoting a data-centric, data-driven culture across all levels and roles in CP R&D.

Abilities:

• To translate business requirements to data / technical requirements and then to business impact and value

• To lead matrix teams of data SMEs, data engineers, tech leads, and suppliers.

• To build solid and trusting working relationships with sponsors, data and digital leads, managers, and SMEs

• Be a strong influencer with excellent interpersonal and communications skills

• Be self-motivated and proactive, ability to anticipate issues early

• To deliver in cross-functional environment on a global scale

• To work across boundaries and multiple levels within the organization

• To meet deadlines and perform duties and responsibilities with minimal oversight

• To guide and coach peers and team members in an intuitive and creative way

This is a critical role in enabling the new strategies in R&D, such as the E2E digital capabilities and transformation.

  • Deep scientific/technical expertise in a relevant area – e.g. chemistry, biology, ecotoxicology, biostatistics, QSAR/QSPR, etc.

  • Experience working in the Life Science industry and leading change in a scientific culture

  • Superb communication skills with leadership, scientific and technical teams

  • Solid understanding of life sciences R&D and innovation processes
